There is a bit of a background for this one. Though I think it is entertaining enough without it. But then again, I know the background...so I guess you should too.
We had a anonymous peer critique at the comics department for the school newspaper where this appears, and one of the critiques is here reproduced in full:
"I love this two guys. The jokes are funny and the art is nice. But here is my problem: I wish they would stop trying so hard to be like Penny Arcade. I mean, that's cool if Penny Arcade is an influence on you and inspires you. Cool. Awesome. All artists are inspired by the great artists that came before. But I think it is wrong to try to BE another artist. By trying to be like Penny Arcade, they lose that honesty and start to enter the Land of Being Phoney. I think Fungasm could be better than it already is if Ling and Leo stopped being like Penny Arcade and started being themselves. The comic would then enter the stratosphere and then really take off!"
well, needless to say, Leo and I found the feedback especially entertaining, and thought it deserved to be shared.
All jokes aside however, to tell you the truth, we are both actually highly honored to be compared to Penny Arcade. Frankly, for me, PA had been a source of inspiration since the very first 3-panel comic I drew back in Middle school, Leo and I still follow it on a regular basis. But even with all the love I have for it, I have no intention of becoming PA. They are heroes for me, and I am not so conceited to imagine trying to take the spot of my own heroes. They happen to fill a niche in the market, and they cater to a certain audience. I cannot claim to fill that same niche, and therefore cannot cater to the same audience. They are a gamer comic, and as much as me and Leo play games, we don't play enough to take this comic in a game-oriented direction. Aside from that though, we really are just 2 guys that find assholery amusing. I suppose in that respect, we are like PA, but they don't have a copyright on 2-men asshole teams, nor do they claim to. PA will always be a source of inspiration for me and Leo, but we have never attempted to emulate them. All of these jokes in our comics are from us, from our conversations, and are things we find funny, and if that makes us like PA, then all I can say is that PA would have a great time if they ever hung out with us.
Though the last pannel looked like you guys were really happy to be flying into the Stratosphere.
